Oman’s green hydrogen ambitions have taken a giant leap forward with the signing of two new projects worth a combined $11 billion. These deals were announced by Hydrom, the government entity driving the country’s green hydrogen strategy.

Surpassing Targets:

  • Hydrom signed agreements with the EDF Group consortium and Actis-Fortescue for green hydrogen projects in Dhofar governorate.
  • These projects, along with previous agreements, bring Oman’s projected green hydrogen production capacity to an impressive 1.38 million tonnes per year (mtpa) by 2030, exceeding initial targets.

Strategic Advantage:

  • Oman’s strategic location between key hydrogen demand centers in Europe and Asia, coupled with strong infrastructure, allows it to capitalize on this clean energy opportunity.
  • H.E. Salim Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, highlighted Oman’s “first-mover advantage” in the global hydrogen industry.

Project Details:

  • EDF Group Consortium Project:
    • Aims to produce 178,000 tpa of green hydrogen by 2030 using 4.5 GW of wind and solar power.
    • Hydrogen will be supplied to a planned ammonia plant in the Salalah Free Zone, producing 1 million tonnes of green ammonia annually.
  • Actis-Fortescue Project:
    • Involves construction of up to 4.5 GW of wind and solar power to produce up to 200,000 tpa of green hydrogen.
    • Hydrogen will be used domestically or processed into green ammonia for export through the Port of Salalah.

Oman’s Green Hydrogen Leadership:

  • Hydrom, established in 2020, has secured over $49 billion in investment commitments for green hydrogen projects.
  • They have allocated over 2,300 square kilometers of land for large-scale production.

Looking Ahead:

These signings solidify Oman’s position as a frontrunner in the green hydrogen race. With its strategic location, strong partnerships, and ambitious goals, Oman is poised to become a major exporter of clean energy solutions.
