The groundbreaking ceremony for Vulcan Green Steel’s (VGS) plant, Oman’s first green-hydrogen-ready steel project in Duqm, commenced under the leadership of Dr Ali bin Masoud al Sunaidy, Chairman of OPAZ.

With an investment of $3 billion, the plant aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes per annum (5 MTPA) of green steel. While initially using natural gas, the project will progressively shift to green hydrogen, reducing emissions by 40%.

Scheduled for completion by 2026, the plant, with 85% fewer CO2 emissions, aligns with Oman’s push for a cleaner industrial economy.

The project integrates renewable energy sources, exploring 24×7 green energy options in partnership with Vulcan Green Energy and OQAE for the Integrated Energy Valley project. The Direct Reduction Iron Plant is set to be the world’s largest single-module plant (2.5 MTPA).
