Oman is set to issue Requests for Qualifications (RFQs) for multiple renewable energy projects this year.

The plans, announced by Nama Power & Water Procurement Co (PWP), involve four wind-based Independent Power Projects (IPPs), a mid-sized solar PV-based IPP, and a Waste-to-Energy initiative.

The projects will be procured through competitive bidding, with RFQs expected to be released within this quarter.

A wind IPP in Duqm with a capacity of around 200-300 MW is planned for Q3 2023 RFQ issuance, followed by a Request for Proposals (RFP) in Q1 2024, and it’s anticipated to be operational by Q3 2026.

Similarly, a Jalaan Bani Bu Ali wind IPP of approximately 100 MW, in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, aims for Q3 2026 Commercial Operation Date (COD).

A 500 MW solar PV project adjacent to the Ibri II Solar IPP will see its RFQ process begin in Q3 2023, targeting commercial operation by 2026.

PWP is also reviving the Waste-to-Energy project in Barka, South Al Batinah Governorate, with plans to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the 130-140 MW project this year. PWP expects to award the project in Q3 2024 and bring it into operation by Q2 2028.

The Dhofar II Wind IPP, a 100-200 MW project adjacent to Oman’s first wind farm, is also part of the procurement cycle and is set to commence commercial operation in 2026.
