The Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC), responsible for the country’s transmission grids, has announced the successful completion of tests to enable remote operation of the Ibri Solar Independent Power Project (IPP), also known as Ibri II Solar IPP. This project has a capacity of 500 MW, making it the largest grid-connected utility-scale solar power initiative currently operating in Oman.

Located in Al Dhahirah Governorate, the project is owned by the Shams Ad-Dhahirah Generating Company (SDGC), a partnership between ACWA Power, Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC), and Alternative Energy Projects Co (AEPC).

OETC, a majority state-owned entity and part of the Nama Group, has confirmed the completion of all necessary tests to remotely control power generation at the Ibri Solar IPP, making it the first solar power plant in Oman connected to the transmission grid. This achievement is a significant step toward enhancing the stability, reliability, and sustainability of the electricity grid while aligning with national carbon neutrality goals.

The remote operation of the Ibri II Solar IPP is overseen by OETC’s Load Despatch Centre (LDC) in Muscat, which also manages other power generation facilities across the country. This centralized facility plays a crucial role in OETC’s mission to ensure the safe, secure, reliable, and cost-effective transmission and dispatch of electricity. The main control center is situated at OETC’s headquarters in Mawaleh, while a regional control center in Salalah manages operations in Dhofar Governorate.

At its peak generation capacity, the Ibri II Solar IPP produces sufficient renewable electricity to meet the needs of around 50,000 households and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 340,000 tonnes annually. The plant became operational in November 2021.
