About: Sustainable Energy Research Center (SERC)

The Sustainable Energy Research Center (SERC) was established in August 2017. This center conducts research in the areas related to sustainable energy, including energy production, renewable energy sources, energy policy, energy efficiency and management, and energy conversion. The center acts as a bridge between SQU researchers in various aspects of sustainable energy and industry.

The main objective of SERC:

1- Foster a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment for scientists, engineers, political and social scientists, and other concerned stakeholders.

2- Undertake independent and objective research to support national, regional and global interest in areas related to energy resources, energy conversion, energy efficiency, energy transportation, conservation and optimization.

3- Support educational and demonstration programs that encourage the implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy systems.

4- Educate and train researchers and policymakers through postgraduate degrees and short course programs in the power and energy field.

5- Contribute to sustainable development at national, regional, and global levels, through social equity, economic efficiency, technology and policy analysis/research.

6- Increase public awareness about the best use of energy, energy conservation, and the feasibility of renewable energy usage especially in rural areas.

7- Build strong and trusted relationships and networks locally and internationally.

8- Serve as a central institute for incubating innovative ideas in the energy sector.

Population, income, prevailing technology, climate and cost are the main factors that had led to energy demand. Through research and study, new sources of energy including renewables and wastes can be used for producing energy. As the young population of Oman continues to grow fast and the demand for energy increases, Oman should face major energy challenges In the coming decades as conventional fossil fuel resource decreases. Thus, Energy plays significant role in Oman’s security, economy and stability.
